I… buy Emily’s sentiment. I believe her. Ryan, don’t let your past relationship with her get in the way. Take her at her word, after which it’s up to Emily to show she means what she says.
To be fair, that last bit was pretty condescending. For all she knows Ryan just loved to travel around and write articles (and he did seem to enjoy it!). Still, point made, and now carry on. She tried to do you a solid, but in a deceitful manner. Deal with how you feel about that.
To be fair, I’d be more than a little irritated, myself. But I know better than to bite the boss’ head off before finding alternate employment if I decide to leave a company.
If Emily fires him for standing up for himself then we can conclude she did not mean a word she said, and just wanted to get ahold of Ryan again. She does know he’s married now, doesn’t she? Or does that not matter to her?
Ryan has a rep as a freelance writer now and Randie is beginning to sell some pictures. They’ll be able to get by if Emily has a snit. Moving to a cheaper apartment, eating more ramen and mac and cheese instead of pizza, and drinking regular coffee instead of lattes and frappucinos and other expensive drinks will help.

So it’s back to freelancing…unless he can be talked down from his position. Would freelancing be from Portland?
What will Randie say???
