I would never share a beer with my Gram. Partly because I am not fond of beer. But also because she’d probably tell me that beer (especially as consumed by Randie here… FROM the bottle) isn’t a ladylike drink.
Neither one of my grandmothers was particularly fond of beer-drinking OR beer drinkers…
Yah… my mom’s mom … is the same way.
My grandmother loved martinis; I forget how old I was when I finally learned that my grandparents were rockin’ social drinkers back in their heyday. If nothing else I would have loved to have shared a drink with them.
Martini… olive or onion? I like those gorgeous Pink Bikini Martinis at my local Tiki Bar… Hula’s. Oh… they go down so quick! Your Grandparents might liked them… tiki bars were all the rage in the 50’s and 60’s.
HUGE advantage for growing up in Wisconsin, in the Lutheran church, in a family with deep German roots: EVERYBODY drank beer, including Grandma Prellwitz. I’ve a photo of Grandma and Grandpa Prellwitz in our bedroom, so if I drank beer in the bedroom – which I don’t, ’cause that’s just weird – I’d probably lift my bottle to them.
Interesting fact #1: In Wisconsin, a parent can take their child into a tavern and have a drink with him; provided the parent poured the alcohol, which was almost exclusively beer.
Interesting fact #2: Wisconsin senator John Blaine was a sponsor of the 21st Amendment (to repeal the 18th Amendment on Prohibition), and Wisconsin the second state to ratify it.
*On Wisconsin!*
Very interesting… those German roots run deep into the beer kegs. I have discovered cider. On my last two trips to Europe, the cider has found me… and I like it! Made from apples and tasty as all get out! Not really good for the kiddies… although… much tastier than beer. Kids aren’t really banned from bars in Europe either… although, I can’t ever remember seeing a kid in a bar in London.
Allergy to alcohol keeps me from drinking, and thank goodness. Alcoholism is a big problem in my family. And oddly, my grandmother is about the only drinker in my family who ISN’T an alcoholic. I’d share a beer with her if I drank!
An allergy? Bizarre… I keep trying to tell myself to cut out alcohol… but like Harold, I have trouble saying no to a glass of Pernod, or a glass of really good Peachy Canyon merlot. Sigh. I guess Harold and I are just lushes. (Okay, it’s not THAT bad… I mean for me… Harold is another story… )
So let’s raise a glass to Grandmas (you can raise your root beer)… after all, it’s my Gram’s birthday today! She’s the one in the picture there.
Weird…I have no idea if either of my grandmas drank. Both were farmers, Methodists and family women, so you can bet they never let anyone know if they did.
And, Happy Birthday Grandma Bea!!!
Are you suggesting they might’ve had flasks?
Gram Bea thanks you, I’m sure.
Actually Grandpa Dombroski was the beer drinker. I remember as a kid Dad asked me to grab him a beer. Being the thoughtful and obedient daughter, I grabbed the beer and a glass. I proceeded to fill the glass with ice cubes and pour the beer over the ice cubes. What did I know? Actually Gram was not a drinker but did hear she may have imbibed in a Bourban. Impressed with your tribute to mom.
I cannot see Gram drinking anything so much as a glass o’ wine… much less a bourbon!Wow…
And what a hoot! Beer over ice! Well, I’m not sure ice would improve beer.
So to Gram… I raise my glass of cider or Pernod, gin and tonic, or cognac… Harold has all his glasses raised!
I showed my grandma this comic. She agreed with Randie…… after all, she didn’t bring a bottle to share!
HAhaha… Gram is wise… and Randie ought to have toasted her Gram there… Old people deserve to be toasted. Hahahahahah!
