It IS nice to see Randie getting out there and selling paintings. Of course, Grace had to come glower a bit, but even she looks great in the new style. Mouse looks more somber and less goofy…has he gotten over his crush now that Randie is spoken for?
I would not count Mouse as being “over Randie.” Grace’s “new look” may be the result of a new outlook on life? Maybe she’s moving on from bad influences and bad people in her life…? Well, that remains to be seen, of course.
This strip looks great, Brig *hugs* 🙂 And, as someone who gets too emotionally invested in fictional characters, I love that Randie and Ryan are together as a couple 😀
Thank you, Astragali… I’m glad that you like it… this shows the gang having fun… and R&R being a couple. As a reader that has been with the strip for such a long time, you’ve waited a long time for the two to get together. Smiles and hugs, back!
Ah but if Grace admits to even dumb curiosity, that is still more than the aggressive indifference she’s shown in the past.
I love Mouse on this page. I don’t know why but it makes me smile to see him, and that he’s not curled up hiding/broken after their wedding (although we still aren’t sure how long after this is).
Hello there!
Yes, Grace has more heart than she lets on. I think that Grace will be making more appearances in the new year. I will let you in on a little secret, I was going to only give her cameos now and again… as the same with Mouse… but I miss them… as many of you have apparently. I wrote a cartoon this week that will give some insight on the timing. I think it’s more fun to let things out more slowly.
i really like new grace. mouse too, but that expression disturbs me. it suggests jaded and withdrawn to me. i hope romantic disappointment and managing a busiless haven’t killed his geekish enthusiasm. that would be tragic. i see, by the way, that randi is having some commercial success with the show. that should bring her coveted vespis a little closer.
Yay… I am glad to see that you (and many of you) are happy to see Grace. I gave her a Joan Jett look, which I think suits her. And I am actually looking forward to writing for her. But this will be in the coming year, as I am almost into January with the toons.
Mouse is standing in the background (on purpose), and this is the first time we see him in R&R. You are correct in your observation…
I just read an article on Burt Reynolds… not someone I admire in the least, but at one point in the article, he says he regrets losing the love of his life, Sally Fields. His actions, although not specifically mentioned, apparently lead to their breakup. Whatever the reason, at the end-ish part of his life… he had that regret. I would say that Mouse is regretting not having the courage to voice his feelings. Maybe he’ll have to find a way to adjust. We will cross that storyline when we get there.
One more thing … Ryan is good for Randie. He is a doer-encourager. Maybe she’ll reach her goal this time!
Grace is back! That’s wonderful! I’ve never, ever, given up on her.
Honestly, I like Grace over Mouse as a character. Mouse always struck me as complete; what you see is what you get. I’ve always felt that Grace, on the other hand, had much more depth to her; with a story to tell. Or stories.
To me, Grace is a hard nut to crack, but when cracked, what’s inside will grow and flourish. I’m so glad she’s coming back so there’s again a chance to find out more.
I have no such feelings for Twinkie, by the way. *lol!*
Yes, you’ve communicated this to me and I agree… we cannot give up on Grace…
Flawed people usually have an interesting story… writing about happy, well-adjusted and smiley people can often lead to boredom. The fact that she and Randie had tiffs make it more fun.
But we will see stuff. I think we got to see the crack in the nut last Christmas when Grace lamented Twinkie’s disappearing act. You’ll recall that Twinkie learned some stuff, too.
Grace’s expression seems almost regretfully surly to me. Like she doesn’t want to fall back into old patterns, but seeing Randie’s look triggers old reactions. I personally like Twinkie and hope that Grace has been as good for his outlook on life as he has been on hers. Mouse, Mouse, Mouse… don’t live on regrets of missed opportunities. There is a girl out there perfect for you and she’s probably mooning over you the way you did over Randie.
Grace has a much larger story. I think that she has, in the time between the “Twinkie walk about” and the present in the strip, much has happened. She dropped her awful boyfriend… and has most likely rearranged her social life. But I will let these things come out in story. Randie, who no longer works for the art store, and is not so much a regular at Java Bob’s (as she used to) doesn’t cross paths with Grace anymore… more on that later. And Mouse will have to deal with his own demons.
I like this comic. I get a very pro-character-thread vibe out of it. Like a snapshot of ‘here’s some of the old crew….. now we get to see how they ended up from there to here!’. Always nice to see old familiar faces. Especially Spill and Enid! Man I wish I had more people like that in my life.
Oh, alright, I admit I’m also curious about what Grace has been up to. My long association with various lunatics in real life has left me with a soft spot for people who are on the long hike out of the dark.

GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!!!
I’m guessing you’re happy to see her, yes?
Grace showed up. That says a great deal about her.
You don’t suppose it was dumb curiosity on Grace’s part?

*heh* Sorry about being a broken record about Grace.
And I do remember that terrific Twinkie story. Whether what he learned will stick…
No no… no broken record. I like that you have faith that she’s not all bad. Twinkie, well…
More of the old gang! Where’s Mouse’s comics-girl pal?
Midge. We might see her… but I haven’t decided HOW MUCH we’ll see her just yet.
…or HOW MUCH OF her we’ll see. Maybe she’s gotten into ‘adult comics’?
Dada… as much as you might wish that, Dada… she’s a non-bare-all barista.
