Chapter: Turkey Sauce, Jingle Joe, & Sog
Location: A coffee shop, Cypress City
It shouldn’t be surprising that Randie prefers to stay indoors while the wet stuff falls from the sky. How many times did we find her upset and cranky over having to go out in the rain to go to work, or deliver coffee? In this case, shopping in the rain means soggy presents… and wet paper… and we all know that PAPER is the friend of the artist… and therefore must remain not-wet… unless you’re a watercolorist… and then it’s a different story.
Here’s some rainy day Squids:

There are these things they call “umbrellas”…
Randie don’t like’m. Maybe someday she’ll tell us why.
A woman not shopping??
Judy’s reply is perty good.
Randie is a very unusual woman, and that’s why we love her. She makes a left turn when most would go right. She forgoes income to do art. She doesn’t consider shopping a sport or a vocation. Although not exactly a role model, she has a great many admirable (and adorable) qualities.
Not a role model?! Okay… there’s the whole irrational fear thing… and the procrastination thing… and the slobby-ness.
Well, I’m not a huge fan of being deluged either. In my case, it’s snow/ice (though not too much of that this year so far) that causes me to cringe. Snow can be tolerable, but I’ve had way too many scary experiences driving on ice! Yeek!
Jon… I agree… my only driving experience in snow and ice was on HWY 70 going west through Kansas. I hit ice and proceeded to 360 on the road and headed straight for the ditch (if you’ve been on hwy 70, you know that the ditch alongside the road is massive). I did what you are supposed to do, which is steer into the spin, and then I did what you are not supposed to do (hit the brakes)… somehow I stopped before hitting the ditch! Whew! My guardian angel was busy that day… there were no cars around me save my sister in the jeep in front of me.
Everyone is getting slightly-used empty cups for Christmas.
*coffee probably not included…at least, not anymore. RIGHT, RANDIE?!
Hey, on an artist’s budget… slightly used and DRAWN on coffee cups is apropos!
Why shop when you can make something much more useful and/or interesting? It’s the gifts that have some heart and thought in them I always appreciate more and that people seem to likewise approve of. Well unless you’re paying for a life-saving surgery for christmas! Then I think I can’t argue against your choice and it’s absolutely appreciated!
Yes… I tell you, there is nothing I love more than getting sketchbooks and pens and things as gifts. I use them up like toilet paper (ooo, too graphic? HA! Get it… graphic??? sigh). This is good gifting.
Just FYI, me and two of my buddies that happened to be over (one an art student, one a cop) all had a good few minutes of giggling at the pun. Also note to self….. if I ever get rich enough to travel and see artists whose work I like, bring sketchbook as gift. Check!
I love the coziness of your Randie and Ryan comics! The feeling of being trapped in a coffee shop during a storm, riding in a car early morning on your way to Big Sur, reminiscing about the Maycee’s Thanksgiving day parade and mom’s turkey sauce… So many feels!
Thank you, Rose (and welcome to comments!) … I am glad you are liking the “feels” … (a nice phrase)… Artists have a lot of “feels” … sometimes too many for our own good! I’d say that poets do, too.
“Sog” is a part of an Oregonian’s life. But yesterday, it was to much sog for anyone. Christmas tree will have to wait another day.
It is one thing that keeps me from living in Oregon… as much as I like it there, the damp sogginess of sog makes me cranky. I also don’t like mold. Perhaps one day, I could be convinced otherwise. Probably nah.
