Pet Crazy
Mar31
This comic was tricky. If you have ever been in a pet store, you know that it is very visually busy… brightly colored toys and dangly things and crazy stuff all over. Trying to represent this in a cartoon is just plain tricky.
Of course, you cat owners know that buying cat toys is a complete waste of money. Foil balls, empty boxes and string … that is ALL you need.
With our first cat, we got a bunch of those cat toys—he tended to avoid them. We never bothered again…one later cat liked batting rolled-up balls of tinfoil across the floor.
Yes… the foil balls are KING at my house… and if you throw a foil ball INTO a box… you have instant YouTube videos.
We found a German Shepherd once and brought him home. We picked up a bunch of stuff for him, but kept our eyes open for Lost Dog posters. Sure enough, after a day or two we found one for him and returned him. His name was Bacon, and the owner thanked us but didn’t otherwise react. And he was lost; it was some miles from his home where we found him.
Oh, well.
What a cute name for a dog. Although, I can see it more for a wiener dog than a German Shepherd.
When I was a kid, we had two Irish Setters. My mom LOVED those dogs. We came home one day to find that someone opened the gate (we had a very large fence situation) and the dogs were gone. My mom searched all of Eureka (where we lived) to no avail. She was heartbroken. Had someone found them, she’d probably given them her firstborn kid… (um… that was me) Okay, maybe something else.
Contrast that to “Meh… thanks for finding Bacon.” Some people are just more attached to their pets I guess.
I know one guy who has a cat (Butter….. I’ve never asked) who just cannot get enough of her scratching post. The other cat in the house (Roger) is all boxes and laundry hampers, all the time, but Butter will spend an entire day clawing, climbing, and perched on top of her scratching post. My friend actually had to get another scratching post for Roger because Butter won’t share hers! She will slowly drag it into another room if Roger decides he likes where it is. They get along great in every other regard, they just don’t share toys.
Oh, just read your comment and had a look. Given the blinding nature of pet stores, I think muting the background was an excellent choice! Unless you wanted to turn this into a ‘Where’s Waldo’ picture hunt (and Ryan’s cheating in that case, he has camo under all those toys and goods!)
Butter!? I love that … now you just need some fellow cats named “Bread” and “Jam”!
What a funny thing! He’s a scratcher… I’m thinking he might have some “cat issues.” Therapy may help there… and I have a tendency (in regards to the ‘muting backgrounds’) to overdo things.
I think it gives the comic a nice look, keeps focus on the important bits, and gives it a unique style. Makes Randie and Ryan look larger than the life around them.
I just had to warn Randie that 20 wayward gnomes were recently on the loose in Scapoose…….https://www.facebook.com/208498777896/photos/a.10150108577347897.275262.208498777896/10153574576142897/?type=3&theater
Maybe her fears not so silly…is it?
HOLY MOTHER OF PEANUT BUTTER! Randie must not see this! She’ll go into major GNOME PANIC… move to a small island off the coast of Canada… and I’ll have to change the name of the strip to “Escape from Gnome City!”
Thanks for the link, Heather… it IS amusing and a conundrum to say the least!
Your welcome…I thought of you right away….Oregon isn’t that far away from Cali after all, those gnomes could have been planning a road trip!
I think it was more sinister than that… but that’s just me. Smiles!
The cat I live with is all about jingle balls (cheap), sparkle balls (also cheap), the dreaded Red Dot (you can get a laser pointer at Dollar Tree these days), and the feather-ball bit off of her fishing wand (which came off in a bit of spectacular play). If she’s hiding somewhere, we just need to find one of her noise-making toys and she’ll make an appearance. 😀
“Jingle Balls, Jingle Balls, Jingles for your cat!” … sorry, it just screamed out for a carol.
The cat you live with sounds high energy. You really ought to get him together with “Butter, the scratching cat” …Trev’s friend’s cat.
I find that most kitties enjoy cat dancers.
What is a cat dancer? Is this a toy?
I suppose these are more called Cat Charmers. I generally just call them rainbow wands, but whatever. Long patterned strip of soft cloth on a wand. Most kitties I have met enjoy (in varying degrees) chasing them around.
I see now… it’s like a bedazzle flag like the use in the Olympics. I like the choice of music for the cat video. The Go-Go’s rocked the 80’s.
