Oh man, that’s a lot of stopovers. We had one each way on our trip to Mexico last month. They’re not bad if you have a little time I think, but having to navigate Houston airport while switching company planes with only an hour to do it got a little rough!
Go forth, Randie, and destroy that food! And if you can, keep an eye on all those lawn gnomes…… they might be up to something!
Yah… that is art imitating life. We looked at a flight that looked similar to that… no kid. I’ve flown in and out of Houston (both airports) many a time… usually during the winter months… no snow delays! And yah… eyes on the gnomes while noshing!
I have to go to the main office in Canada at least once a month. Fortunately being Project Lead I get budgeted for business class, which includes direct flights. Also my older sister is an Airline Exec bigwig and I get cheap flights and free upgrades for my own travel, so I flew first class transatlantic when I was working on my doctorate in England. I once sat next to Charles Asnavour and I think I sat next to David Bowie once – if so he wasn’t traveling ‘celebrity mode’
I learned to hate conventions and trade shows long ago and avoid them when I can. Once at the World Science Fiction Convention I nearly killed George RR Martin with an inadvertent bad joke, so there was almost no Game Of Thrones because of me.
I think I could have lived with that. I’ve said I wouldn’t read “Game of Thrones” till it was complete and done—and it now looks like that’s never gonna happen.
I’m in the same boat for different reasons. I won’t read or watch the series because of how many obnoxious fans have tried to cram it down my throat. I hate to admit it, but….. I kinda hate George through his fan base. I’m sure he’s a great guy, but just because he’s generated so many pushy jerk fans I kinda hate him for what he’s done, you know?
I met Martin a few times – didn’t know him at all well – but he was certainly nice enough. I know he went out of his way to help a lot of young writers.
But fandom has been the curse of many writers. Gordon Dickson created the Dorsai series back in the 60s and it was perhaps the first of what we would now call the cosplay cult fandoms. During the 70s and 80s his fans would arrive in Dorsai character (They were the inspiration for the Mindalorians like Boba Fett in Star Wars) at conventions where he appeared to be his ‘bodyguards’ and would do anything, even physically attack other people to keep them away from him. But Dickson himself was a very quiet, friends, even nerdy guy who got a bad reputation from his own fans.
There have been times when I schedule one or more stops on a flight. I really enjoy takeoffs and landings, so if I have the time and the flight times match nicely… yeah, I’ll take the long way.
I wonder what would be their reaction if Spill and Randi found out their gnomes were selling for $10,000 each? With Jimmy getting all the credit? Would they be happy? Or furious? Hmm…
I, too, enjoy the landings and take-offs. San Diego is one of the more exciting places to do this. The airport is right downtown and you fly in right through the buildings. You fly over Balboa Park… and when you take off… you go right out over the ocean! It’s quite cool!
No refunds?
Not at the late date…
