Nepenthe…
Aug04
One of my favorite places is Nepenthe, a restaurant/artsy boutique and Big Sur lookout. It’s quite the storied locale full of fanciful tales, legendary literary figures who often visited and delicious food and drink offerings.
Ryan’s writings have long been a part of Squid Row… here’s a few examples of Ryan’s pen at work:

Sounds like a nice place. Oddly, I’ve heard the name before somewhere, but I can’t put my finger on where or who said it. Hmmm, that’s gonna bug me now!
Nepenthe was the drug of forgetfulness in Greek mythology, first mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey, among it’s other later uses.

Yes, the name is taken from this… I like the idea of a place that could make you forget your sorrows. It truly is a place that you could enjoy the beauty of the surroundings… and be happy in that.
Nicely done! This is going to look gorgeous in book form.
…there will be a book, right? RIGHT?!
Thank you, Dada… I foresee these pages as a book in a graphic novel situation in the future.
By the way, folks… “Scapula” is up and running again after a brief hiatus over at Scapulacomic.com. If you go, be forewarned… there’s noodie people there.
Nice and all poetry. Ryan’s words float aloft on a gossamer pine breeze with a pinch of sea salt to garnish the air.
And for those wanting a Moscow Mule, have your copper mug ready!

Thank you, Pete… you and Ryan should get together and write sometime… like a write-off… you know, like a walk off (Zoolander)… hahaha.
I had no idea that it was an Oprah favorite. THEY ARE pretty darn tasty.
LOVE the art! Your poetry captures the beauty and wistfulness of the place, and the colors…soooo nice.
It kinda makes ya wanna get in the car and drive down to Big Sur, don’t it.
Stay tuned for more Big Sur fun, folks.
It’s been a while since I had an Ambrosia burger… the last time I was down there, I was seated inside facing the back patio. Everybody was pointing to the sky and looking up. I didn’t want to go out because the waitress had not yet taken my order and I didn’t want to miss my opportunity. Well, after she came I went outside to see what was up. Turns out there had been not one, but TWO California condors right over the roof of the restaurant where they couldn’t be seen from inside. By the time I got out there they were, of course, gone. Sigh…
When I was last there at Nepenthe, we had a lovely muscat-ish wine that complimented the cheese plate we’d ordered (as a starter- I know, the French prefer the cheese at the end of the meal…). The food is always amazing!
That would have been a sight to see. Crazy BIG birds floating around the terrace and the trees. Next time.
Lettering, colors, lines and page design…besides being individually skillful on this page, the pieces all working together synergistically with the theme. Really quality stuff, Brig.
Thank you! I am most appreciative. This one took a very long time to do, but I had fun.
The guy at the other table looks vaguely familiar, but I can’t quite place him. Hmmmm.
He is actually based on Bill Fassett, the creator of Nepenthe. He has a very familiar face. I coulda sworn I’ve met him before, but ce n’est pas possible.
Literary figures like Henry Miller?
Yes, indeed… like Henry Miller.
According to “My Nepenthe” by Romney Steele, Henry Miller “used Nepenthe like his private club.” It is said that the far side of the bar was called “the Dirty Corner” where Miller and poet Eric Barker would hang out and spout bawdy tales and dirty limericks. Others to visit were Jack Kerouac, Richard Brautigan, Dylan Thomas…
