Nearing Home
Aug02
Sometimes near the end of a trip, you get the “I just wanna go home” feeling. Your trip may have been incredibly exciting, and you may still be enjoying yourself immensely… but you just feel like you want to sleep in your own bed… and pet your cat.
San Diego…Randie…San Diego…Randie…tough choice, right?
Sandy Eggo is a nice place to visit… now… I lived in Del Mar in the early to mid 90’s. It’s very different now… more traffic, Downtown has cleaned up… and it is far to warm for me now. I’ll take the jeans and the fuzzy grey socks.
Very nice! Perfect tone, Brig!
Thanks, Pete… the coffee shop panel is Upstart Crow… my favorite coffee haunt Downtown… a place of books, a high-minded readery… and coffee hangs in the air (they also have gifts and silly things). Ryan loves this, of course… The term “upstart crow” was an insult upon Shakespeare.
“Upstart Crow” is a fixture at Seaport Village, which is being threatened with a bulldozer. They want to re-develop the area into a slick shopping something or the other. This would oust the ducks that live in the ponds and uproot all the touristy shops AND the historic Merry-go-round. Many are up in arms, including myself.
I love how Ryan sees Randie as both a blue haired siren and as her own comfie self in fluffy socks. They say wisdom comes with the ability to hold opposing views simultaneously. Ryan seems very wise.
Judy… He’s pretty wise, I’d say… in most things. He twirls words which make nifty images … (for me to draw).
Being the project lead for a game development company, I have to make a quick trip to our main office in Canada at least once a month to attend to problems that can’t be handled off-site. And overnight flight to Toronto, usually a day there and back again to the high desert. The climate shock first one way and then the other is sometimes very surreal. If I stay too long then like Ryan it starts to feel familiar. A cat waiting for me would be getting off easy – I have two horses, two Pomeranians and two disabled house foxes.
And now I would like to see Mermaid Randie. Beware the gnomefish!
THAT IS quite a shock to the system. I lived, in my youth, in desert places…Bar[f]stow and 29 Palms… it is such the extreme of eco-zones. There is a wonderful tram that goes from the desert floor of Palm Springs, CA, straight up the side of Mt. San Jacinto. It climbs through 4 eco-zones. At the top, there are sugar pines and the air is cooler and sweet smelling (it also snows up there). It is one of my favorite places.
This Fall, I will be visiting for the first time, Eastern Canada… the land of my people (at least on my Mom’s side)… Montreal, Quebec City, and Three Rivers. I am tres excited!
I’ll take a warm heart over a warm town any day. Of course I’m Canadian so I’m biased about cold weather…… although in my case I like it. I’ll take warm socks over shorts and fog over sun any day.
Sun is fun and makes hair frizz
But home is where the lady is.
Trev, See the above response to Unca Bilbo. And I am with you! I likes me some marine layer and fog! I like bundling up… I like the cool air and the change of seasons…. and your poem. Where, again, in Canada is you?
Charlton, Ontario, Canada. It’s quite a few hours out of your way and the population is about 250 people so it’s easy to miss! You’ll be not too far off geographically though, I’m actually not too far off from the Quebec border.
And you chose a GREAT time to come Canada-wise! A bit chill, but if you get out of the cities or hit the parks, the colours of the trees are something to see. Make the effort if you can, you will probably find some great sketch material!
Love the top right “Randie in the ocean” image; beautiful.
Thank you, Ian… I enjoyed the drawing and coloring of this particular page.
