Catchin’ Up…

If you’ve followed Squid Row at all, you’d know that Randie and Spill couldn’t afford to get into the Cypress City Jazz Fest… (akin to the world famous Monterey Jazz Festival)…
Here’s some Squid Row history for you:

Ugh, I’ve hit this roadblock before. ‘Why aren’t you taking me?’ is usually code for ‘I don’t think it’s fair you get to go if I don’t!’. I’ve had some very good friends get very sour on me over a stroke of good fortune on my behalf. Usually not for long, thankfully.
I catch myself in Spill’s shoes… I find myself feeling somewhat jealous… but still happy for some other cartoonist’s success. I think it is human nature. But you have to tell yourself… that can happen for you… just be patient, and be joyful for others in their success.
Man, that is so true!
Out here, it’s the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Back around 1990, one of the People In Charge – who’s real job was as a VP at the publishing company where I was the IT guy – inadvertently deleted the festival’s VIP list. She came to me and I magically brought it back. (NEVER think that your deleted files are deleted, because they’re not.)
As a thank you, she gave me tickets for the upcoming Folk Festival. The one day tickets she gave us had a face value of $47.50 each! And that was 25 years ago. We had a terrific time, but there was no way I could ever afford to go again. (The 2015 PFF Saturday Only tickets were $75.)
So hip-hip-HoRyan for those Jazz tickets!
I see these unfortunate trends… you know, artists observe a lot… that the prices of events, amusements, and destinations are skyrocketing.
Poor Randie hasn’t been able to attend the Jazz Festival for years… instead, she stood outside and found a concealed nook and listened to stray music waft out over the perimeter fence.
When I first moved to Santa Cruz, I moved up on Monterey Jazz Festival Weekend. I was putting my room together (I was renting a room in a house in Aptos)… and I had the radio on… I found a local station that was broadcasting from the fest… and I was hooked! Interesting enough, the announcers were talking about this new Jazz musician who was about to take the stage… an up and coming piano playing crooner… that musician was Diana Krall.
… and it’s hip-hop-ho for Kai… the press-pass-passer…
…and more Squid Row characters come creeping back. I forget if Enid has already appeared in the new series or if this is her grand re-debut, but it’s still interesting to see the ol’ gang in the new style.
But who will be next? Mouse? Rat? Evil bat-winged Randie head?
Dada… This would be Enid’s first time back. I, however, am seeing now that I don’t like the size of her noggin. This usually happens when you re-imagine something… and you are at the beginning. I will adjust.
As far as how is next…. you have foreseen the future… but not all will make a comeback!
In all honesty, I’m hoping we’ll see Grace again. But hopefully something has happened to her in the time between comics and her life – and view of life – has improved somewhat. Oh, still a grouch. But not a mean one. And one that is trying to see things in a more positive life.
The character of Grace has always fascinated me, and I’ve always maintained the faith that she is a good person, waaaaaaay down deep, and that it would slowly bubble to the surface.
I like E’s smooth, new glasses!
THanks… her hair got less pointy, too. Good changes… but I am remorse of how big I drew her head (and Spill’s). Ugh! It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Kinda depends on the backstory here. If they’d been planning on going for ages and now Randie’s all ‘I’m going!’, I’d be a dab miffed.
Never mind Grace, I wanna see Twinkie!
